Declining Birth Rates Lead to a Devastating Statistic for China

Updated: Mar 9, 2023

The Scoop: China's population, according to the nation's National Bureau of

Statistics, is shrinking.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, "Current United Nations estimates show China’s total population falling by up to 100 or 200 million by 2050."

Reported smaller in 2022 than in 2021, the crisis of China's shrinking population has been brought about by years of restrictive policies including forced abortions and sterilizations.

Reformed Take:

This news shows that China may, indeed, grow old before it grows rich (and powerful). in other words, China's economy will not grow fast enough to accommodate its aging (and now shrinking) population. Not only this, but it calls attention to the destructive consequences of sterilization, abortion, and a general lack of reproduction among healthy couples.
