REPORT: Don't Miss What's Coming from the Supreme Court

Updated: Oct 18, 2021

1. ROE V. WADE AND ABORTION LEGISTLATION

Following Amy cony Barrett's elevation, the Supreme Court has now agreed to hear appeals directly calling for the overruling of Roe v. Wade.

Previously, the court had declined to even hear these cases, suggesting that there were not at least five justices ready to vote for its overruling.

Even though, according to legal experts, the chances are extremely thin that the 1973 decision will be overturned, the fact that the court has agreed to hear this case is promising for the prolife (as well as the abolitionist) movement.

THE MISSISSIPPI CASE

In a hearing scheduled for December, Mississippi will argue to reinstate its law banning abortions after 15 weeks. Lower courts had struck this law down due to previous Supreme Court “presidents.”

Mississippi will argue that the simplest solution will be to strike down any ruling which their law has been found to violate.

2. THE GUN CASE

In 2008 and 2010 decisions the Court decided to recognize the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms for the express purpose of self-defense, but only within one’s own home.

There will be a challenge brought regarding a New York state law limiting concealed carry permits to those who have “proper cause" or who will only carry in their home.

This challenge is scheduled for the month of November, where we might see the court expand the official recognition of concealed carry rights.

3. FLYING THE CHRISTIAN FLAG

The court has agreed to take up multiple issues regarding religious liberty this term. One of which has to do with whether the city of Boston has violated the First Amendment by rejecting a cross bearing Christian flag when the flag was requested to be flown, as is customary, outside the City Hall.*

*The city of Boston currently allows the flying of the LGBTQ+ flag outside the building.

4. TEXAS INMATE CONDEMNED TO DEATH

Finally, in November the court will vote on whether the condemned Taxes inmate, John Henry Ramirez, has the right to request that his pastor lay hands upon him while he is executed. This act would violate current state protocol.
