Daily Reading: Mathew 10:1-20
Here, Jesus calls and equips his twelve disciples in order that they might spread the gospel to the "lost sheep" of Israel.
Firstly, the is important to note that it is God who does the calling, and God who does the empowering. God called his disciples by name and chose them. Jesus says in John 6:70, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve?" They did not approach Jesus, or bring with them any authority to act as apostles on their own.
Because of this, they are commanded to offer their services free of charge. "Freely you have received; freely give." (Matt 10:8)
How much have we been given? And yet, how much do we still expect to receive in return for our good deeds? James 1:17 tells us that "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father..." Everything good in our lives, even the ability to minister the gospel, is given to us freely from above. Let us offer it freely to others.
