With the slew of conspiracy theories and disinformation regarding President Donald Trump retaining nuclear codes at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Americans would do well to know how a President uses the nuclear codes, and to understand the kinds of crazy mishaps that can - and will - happen during this process.
The former carrier of the “Nuclear Football” for President Bill Clinton, Buzz Patterson, stated regarding attacks on Mr. Trump that it simply “Does not work that way.”
In an article published Friday in Newsweek magazine, Patterson confirmed that “For those who buy the lie that President Trump stole nuclear codes: Codes change when presidents change. It’s not that intriguing.”
Patterson also told Newsweek that the nuclear codes were “briefly lost” in 2000 after he had stepped down as Senior Military Aide. He commented that “Just a reminder, but Bill Clinton LOST the nuclear codes during my tenure with him. We weren’t raided.”
These lost nuclear codes by Clinton were also confirmed by former Joint Chiefs of Staff for Clinton, General Hugh Shelton. He said that Pentagon officials kept asking to see the nuclear codes, which were lost, so the Pentagon kept being told that the codes were “with the President.” Shelton also stated that “This comedy of errors went on without President Clinton’s knowledge” until these current codes were to be replaced with new codes.
“The President never did have the codes...they had been missing for months,” Shelton commented. An internal investigation was launched and the procedures surrounding nuclear codes “were tightened.”
President Trump did respond to the misinformation spreading on social media stating that the “Nuclear weapons issue is a hoax” and calling on the justice department to “Release the documents now.” This was regarding the search warrant issued to the FBI Monday.
