Number of Murders in 2021 Hits All-Time High in Urban America

U.S. - As mayors' offices tally the crime statistics for 2021, evidence shows that it was the deadliest ear on record. (1)

Cities that saw a new record in murders this year include Philadelphia, Portland Ore., Louisville KY, and Albuquerque N.M.

Philadelphia, the nation's 6th largest city, hit a record 562 homicides. This was the highest increase in murders for the city in over 30 years. (2)

Though criminologists and law-enforcement officials don't all agree on the causes of this, the general consensus is that the rise in crime is largely related to efforts to defund law enforcement in many of these cities, as well as heated black/police relations.

Much of this was politicized throughout 2020 due to the George Floyd murder and other significant events.

It is also likely that bail reform (this was common in many of America's most dangerous cities), which leads to fewer prosecutions, is to blame for a large portion of the 2021 crime wave.

This contributed to the release of the 39-year-old Wisconsin man, who now faces five counts of first-degree murder after driving his vehicle into a holiday parade being held in the suburb of Waukesha, WI, killing five people and injuring 48 others, including 18 children in November of 2021.
