The Free World Responds to Russia's Ukraine Invasion

Updated: Feb 28, 2022

World Watch-President Vladimir Putin of Russia ordered Russian troops to invade regions of Ukraine after declaring their independence from Ukraine late Monday night.

Russia: the Enemy

This move has made Russia the enemy of the West and is threatening to disrupt the security of peace and trade.

Western nations have moved swiftly to condemn the actions by the Russian military. The U.S., the U.K., and the E.U. have issued bans on investing in Russian companies and are planning to impose sanctions on Russia within the coming days.

Nations Respond:

Germany has said it halted moves to open the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would allow Russia to directly export natural gas to Europe.

The E.U. has proposed a ban on purchases of Russian bonds.

The U.K. government has announced its first wave of sanctions against five Russian banks and three wealthy Russian individuals, according to the WSJ. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this was the “first barrage” of sanctions against Russia and that more would follow if Russia continued its advances in Ukraine

U.S. President Joe Biden has announced a wave of "devastating" sanctions on Russia, but many analysts believe it will take more than these to punish Russia's "sanction proof" economy.
