San Francisco Mayor Reverses Position on Defunding Police

Updated: Jan 25, 2022

After the death of George Floyd, anti-police protests erupted across the nation for the greater portion of 2020.

This often led to police funds being reduced in many Democrat-controlled cities. Several large cities cut police budgets, and in Minneapolis (MN) a measure to get rid of the police altogether, replacing it with “The Department of Public Safety,” was proposed.

As was expected, the bill did not get enough public support to justify its ratification. It's a good thing too, because with fewer police patrolling the streets, crime rates rose dramatically in 2020 and set records in 2021.

Democratic lawmakers have looked the other way for a long time, but opinions appear to have changed among a select few members on the left. One of those select few is Mayor London Breed of San Francisco. She said she has decided to put more funds into her city’s police force.

“It’s time that the reign of criminals who are destroying our city, it is time for it to come to an end."

She continued on,

"And it comes to an end when we take the steps to be more aggressive with law enforcement, more aggressive with the changes in our policies, and less tolerant of all the [crime] that has destroyed our city, we are going to turn this around.”

She did not appear to take responsibility for the massive crime wave, despite playing a lead role in diverting millions of dollars away from San Francisco's police force.
