Youngkin Takes Home the Win in Virginia: Why is This So Important for the GOP?

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

The Portland Post became one of the first major news sites to call the Virginia Gubernatorial race for the GOP candidate, Glenn Youngkin. But after McAuliffe formally conceded Wednesday, it became clear to the nation that Virginia, for the first time since 20014, would have a Republican Governor.

With Youngkin at times ahead of his challenger, Terry McAuliffe by 10 percentage points, one of McAuliffe's campaign volunteers said, "This is not a blowout, but a bloodbath."

With 99% of expected votes counted, Youngkin is currently ahead over 2%.

All this with over 1.1 million mail in ballots being cast due to expanded voting rights legislation pushed by Virginia Democrats over the summer. Concerned about being blinded by temporary victory, many Republicans are calling on Youngkin to fight for DeSantis-style election integrity precautions once he becomes Virginia governor.

The eyes of Americans turned to Virginia for the Tuesday election, partly because it was a definite toss-up, but mostly because of the massive national implications of the election.

With the Congress up for Grabs in 2022, the two major political parties turned to the Virginia “off-season” gubernatorial race, which is historically considered to be a strong indicator of the political climate of the US. This race has long been thought of as a bellwether election.

The results of this GOP win predict another strong turnout of GOP voters in the 2022 midterm elections. It also indicates that Americans are sick of Democrat leadership; this of course, starts with the Commander in Chief: Joe Biden.

Joe Biden campaigned for (D) Terry McAuliffe, but instead of boosting McAuliffe's poll numbers, he only shrunk them.
